A footnote reference appears in every default Word doc
Help,
Somehow a random footnote got stuck in my Word Default doc and I can't find a way to get it out.
Every new document has a superscript 1 at the top left.
I've changed the default several times in several ways, but I haven't discovered the way to get it out.

In recent versions of Word, opening the Normal template for editing can require quite a treasure hunt through Windows Explorer.
To bypass this, open it this way:
In Word, press Alt+F11; the Visual Basic Editor opens.
Press Ctrl+G to activate the Immediate window.
In that window, type
NormalTemplate.OpenAsDocument
and press Enter.
Normal opens, but note that it may not be on top of all windows.
You can close the Visual Basic Editor.
Make the desired changes to the Normal file, and then save and close it.
If the changes you have made have not been recognized as changes
(the Undo button is not activated), press Spacebar, then Backspace to "dirty" the file, thus ensuring that the template will actually be saved.

There are malicious people who download valid copies of a popular download, modify the file with malicious software, and then upload the file with the same name. Make sure you are downloading from the developer's web page or a reputable company.
Cancel or deny any automatic download
Some sites may automatically try start a download or give the appearance that something needs to be installed or updated before the site or video can be seen. Never accept or install anything from any site unless you know what is downloading.
Avoid advertisements on download pages
To help make money and pay for the bandwidth costs of supplying free the software, the final download page may have ads. Watch out for anything that looks like advertisements on the download page. Many advertisers try to trick viewers into clicking an ad with phrases like "Download Now", "Start Download", or "Continue" and that ad may open a separate download.
