can you print from web browser in home netwrek with windows 8 or 7 whitout having a server installed?

hi,
oI like to know if in homenetwerk enviroment is it possible to print using web browser .
I have installed IIS in my both computers and enabled my HP  smart web printing .
I have aslo added  the printer to netwerk , I see in add printer wizard  under adres tab  the path of my printer which is 
\\john-pc\hp photosmart xxxx series.  
I tried to go to web browser  inmy other computer and type http:\\john-pc\hp photosmart xxxx series but it is not working .
I have a book of exam from years ago windows xp professional exam70-270  in which it is describing how to configure to print from web browser  but it is telling otherwise the slashes  like this //    for example 
http://john-pc/hp photosmart xxxx series  .   
I tried both ways  but whitout result .  I can print from my second computer in home netwerk that is not a problem.
but one thing I don't understsand exactly  is printing from web browser is only possible
1-- if there is a server installed    (for example server 2008)   or
2- you have to have printer as a server for example attached to a router  or
3- it is possible in normaal situations too with windows 7 or 8 .
if yes wat I am doing wrong?
