Computer Freezes when swtching users or returning from Power Saving/Sleep Mode

I recently bought a new computer  - a Compaq Presario with Windows 7 installed.
The problem is that I can not use the switch-user function or the sleep mode.  For example if I leave the computer for too long it switches into sleep mode.  When I return I switch it back on using the power swtich on the hard drive.  The screen saver appears
but then the screen is frozen and no icons appear.  No keys on the keyboard work.
It is frozen.  So I  press the power button  on the hard-drive for ten seconds and switch off.  Then I must press it again to turn the computer back on.  Then the screen tells
me that Windows didn't close normally. 
The same thing happens when I want to switch users with another family member. 
I think I must be doing something wrong.  But what ?
I would appreciate some help.

On running the System Update readiness Command, it will Detect & Replace Incorrect Registry data with the Correct one. Which may ultimately Solve Computer Freezes when swtching users or returning from Power Saving/Sleep Mode in Windows.
