dell media direct does not work after windows 7 32bit upgrade

I have a dell xps m1330 and recently upgraded to windows 7 32bit

The dell has media connect that allows it to play a dvd without actually booting windows.
it saves battery and is quicker to start / shut down.

Unfortunately, after upgrading to windows 7, this no longer works.
It does not recognize the dvd.

Once I start windows, I can use media player to play the dvd, so I know the dvd is valid.

Suggestions?
