Cannot connect to SQL database from homegroup machine

We have set up SQL server on one of the Homegroup computer A.
On computer B, in the same homegroup, we have a word document that uses mail merge function.
The merge requires to use the SQL database in Computer A.
We have created a SQL login user in the database.
When we opened the word file, type in the user name and password in the
data link properties page, and click the test connection button, it returns

Test connection succeeded.
---------------------------
However, when we click the OK button on the data link properties page, it shows
Error has occurred: Login failed.
The login if from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authetication.
On the computer A, we can use this mail merge word document without any problems.
How to solve this? I googled, and it seems the only solution is to create domain account, which is not practiable here.
The homegroup only consists of 3 computers.
A strange phenomenon is, after I restart the computer A where the SQL service is running, the computer A shows the desktop.
At the very beginning, the Word on computer B can access the database without any problem, but after a short while, it won't any more.
