Shortly after startup my Dell laptop freezes up after clicking on any icon. Even in Safe Mode it freezes. I am able to still move the mouse icon but you cant click on anything. Worked ok this morning and computer sat idle for several hours, and
now freezes up. Any suggestions?
This same problem occurred for me under Vista and is still occurring under Windows 7 - even after doing all the cleanup and virus checks.
Odd thing happens: After startup, when I don't use the computer, Webshots screensaver starts on schedule.
When I open any
desktop icon and try to execute a command, Windows freezes.
The only way I've found to work around this problem is to "CTL-ALT-DEL" and run "Task Manager".
I simply exit the task manager menu that appears on the Desktop and everything works normally (except
Screensaver) until next restart.
I would appreciate any suggestions to resolve this situation!

I discovered one solution to this situation and I don't know why it works: I created a new User ID so that when the computer boots or restarts, I have to select my original Administrator Logon rather than logging directly to the desktop.
When I
select my logon ID, I'm able to open and execute any program without windows freezing and I didn't do anything to change my original ID!
