backup will not show backup periods

Does anyone know why Windows 7 backup will not show backup periods that it makes separately so that I can delete the older backup and save space? When I go to manage space it will show only one period date and all full backups are combined and instead
of a 80 gig backup I have 160 gig backup and no way of deleting the older backup.

Does anyone know how to select the number of full backups to keep? Where is this option? How can I delete the backup file I have now and start a new one from scratch? When I delete the backup file and try to begin another Windows does not give me the option
of selecting how many full backups to keep.
